Here to examine and challenge existing biases in life and sports...fun stories, and a lot of bad data.
Playoff Mode - Just How Different Are the NBA Playoffs? An analysis…
Are the NBA Playoffs...truly different? Statistically different than the regular season, or are we simply fooling ourselves?
Undoubtedly, the playoffs FEEL different, but often times our intuition can fool us.
We decided to test out several playoff differences, including defense, officiating, score differential, shooting...and much more.
On a personal note, this year is especially fun given the significant parity we see in the league (at least in the west). It really feels like there are 6-7 teams who could win it all, just out of the west...looking forward to some fun series.

We Measured "Luck" in the NFL. It’s a BIG deal.
Переглядів 185 тис.Місяць тому
What role does luck play in football? In sports? First, we need to figure out how we can measure “luck”…if we can measure it, then we can examine it. Michael Mauboussin has done some research on this very topic…laying out the different sports from “Skill” to “Luck”. However, this isn’t the main fixation of this video…instead, we focus in on the role of luck in football. Specifically, it’s impac...
Upsets Are Surging in March - Here’s Why
Переглядів 89 тис.Місяць тому
March Madness…has been getting crazier. The last ten years has lead to an increase in upsets, but why? What is causing this, and how have underdogs statistically faired? Better yet, why are we so drawn to underdogs? Betting on the underdog is a bold move…but it might not be. In this video, I went back through about forty years of betting history, and tournament data. I knew the game had changed...
The Clutch GOAT...(it's not who you think).
Переглядів 253 тис.2 місяці тому
Who is the most clutch shooter of all time? To understand this, we need to first define what clutch is… Clutch is a vague term - so I worked with Mike Beuoy to build out multiple charts, and variations of “clutch”. Keep in mind, advanced stats didn’t start in the NBA until 1996, so it’s difficult to go further back than this… The NBA defines clutch as a five-point game with five minutes left in...
Investigating the Accuracy of College Football Recruiting Rankings
Переглядів 271 тис.3 місяці тому
Every year, several recruiting sites (247 Sports, Rivals, ESPN) release their recruiting rankings…but, just how accurate are these rankings? How good are we at predicting potential? This…was a project. I spent weeks (with the friendly help of others) building spreadsheets full of prior recruiting years (2-5 Stars with Rivals and 247Sports). We used Rivals for the All-Pro examination, as many of...
Does Losing Lead to Winning? An Analysis of the Winning Paradox in Sports
Переглядів 332 тис.5 місяців тому
A comeback happens seemingly every game…but do teams actually play better when their losing…? And worse when they’re ahead? In this video, we analyze the elasticity of comebacks (specifically in the NBA) and the studies done around potential causation. The NBA has long been a league where it is known that a 10-20 point lead can evaporate within one quarter…but how much of this is an actual tren...
Solving Basketball - Exposing the NBA’s Biggest Inefficiency
Переглядів 410 тис.5 місяців тому
Do you think that basketball...has been solved? Pundits would claim that "the game is simple"...just follow the fundamentals, and winning will transpire. Additionally, NBA analysts believe we have hit a plateau, and that easy advantages (such as 3 vs. 2) are no longer to be found. Is this the end of strategic evolution..? Are there no more hoops secrets to be found, and all that matters now is ...

Renting vs. Buying a Home - The Strange Evolution and Prospect of Owning the Earth
Переглядів 19 тис.7 місяців тому
Description As Michael Heller states in his book "Mine!", "We all know what it means to own something"; however, much of what we assume for ownership, is wrong. This is especially true when it comes to home ownership - and my grandfather's story, though anecdotal, can serve as an example of this... The "Rent vs. Buy" discussion is more than just a mathematical analysis...far more. Home ownershi...
You Will Never Look at the NFL Draft the Same
Переглядів 912 тис.9 місяців тому
Ever wondered what the market efficiency is for the NFL draft? That is...how billion dollar organizations choose and trade their players, and whether or not it lines up with what the data/math says they should do? The NFL Draft is a worldwide spectacle held once per year. A day where the success of a team hangs in the balance. One wrong move and you could be set back years behind the field, one...

“Getting back on defense, that sucks”
This is legit! For those fan bases that don’t get more than a first round opportunity every 5 years or so I really feel sorry for you. That being said it’s gotta feel fucking sweet to be TWolves fans right about now. When patience does pay off…
so interesting about the blowouts - Nuggets just lost to Minnesota by more than 40 points. They were even trailing by 49....
Next change in the NBA: You only get paid for the games you win.
Tackling enduring questions is a lost art that you are refreshingly in touch with. We love sports because they mirror life. We can address existential questions in a less-threatening context where biases are generally less grave, thereby less polarizing, and therefore less menacing. Hopefully this allows us to slow down, set our egos aside, and face reality with greater courage and greater clarity. Attaining this on UA-cam's platform is evidence of mastery in your chosen medium. Keep it up.
I would say herb jones is possibly better than michael porter jr, PER is heavily slated towards offensive players
Why are reversals not charted and marked on the stats?
can you just show your analysis without those corny not funny pdf slides thanks
Alternative title - white boys who were picked last in middle school during pickup games: come get your revenge!
Brilliant analysis, the major sports casters need to find you and bring you on! 🙌🏻
Why do you think a newby called Wemby broke the NBA for his first year ? Cos NBA's level is not that high. Super overrated.
usa dont play defense or team basketball, is all about 1v1 and step back 3 for team usa. happy to see they fail. BECAUSE THAT IS NOT BASKETBALL.
thedreamerspro channel punching air rn.
Quick question: where do you get specific player data such as Tony Allen’s 3pt% when given 6+ feet of room? I want to conduct more statistical analysis on the NBA and would love to know some good resources for data. Thanks!
No one else caught Sister Jean in the Loyola photo?!
Good presentation. But your points never went anywhere. So 🤷♂️
The math. The legos. The Agent Smith voice. It’s all perfectly blended together. Good stuff.
love the drama vibes of your delivery. but why so serious?
ARe you trying to say ANT isnt good because he can't play center on defense? WTF was with that selection of clips
I think the heavy use of analytics has also changed the way NBA and American sports leagues play. We've put such a emphasis on winning that we're using metrics that aren't as correlated or have a factors that can't be put in numbers.
It's really quite simple. Overbearing parents and agents looking for a big payday have weaponized hyper talented teenagers and destroyed the ability of coaches to guide their youth. These kids don't know how to play the game. They aren't learning and improving in college and when they get to the NBA they are babies.
I can’t stand American players
I have a suggestion for a video Michael: Why do major college accolades not always translate to high draft picks. For example Trey Taylor wins Jim Thorpe award for best defensive back and goes 7th round, Max Duggan wins Davey O'Brein award (national qb award) goes 7th round, T'Vondre Sweat wins Outland Trophy (Outstanding Interior Lineman) goes early 2nd round.
Just curious as to why there is a discrepancy between how voters decide college sports awards and how gm's value these prospects
Might be a good future one, thank you!
Of course man i damn sure don't have the brains nor storytelling ability to make it happen! Love your content the best sports channel out there!!
Do you really want teams to throw away the playoffs to become the favorites to land the number 1 pick? Because that's exactly what would happen. It would happen almost every year. The 6 seed and lower wild be a wasteland as teams weighed getting bounced in the first versus drafting the next superstar.
World aint doing shit Europeans can't jump so now they added a step ala eurostep to allow European and American whites to play which in turn helps the bottom line 😂😂😂
Different analogies to back up the data makes it easier for someone like me who doesn't keep up with basketball all the time thanks.
Appreciate that!
This news is going to really hurt black kids in the hood. The NBA has ceased to play defense because big scores get the views.
The NBA has gone Harlem, globe Trotters.
People often forget basketball is a team game. Star power makes the the team into a highlight reel, which more often then not crumbles when things get sketchy...
What would ypu recommend as a first degree between International Finance and Banking and Accounting and Finance degree?
White power????
The "comedy" was overdone
And in conclusion, the clutch GOAT is Robert Horry
There is something else…. Has anyone else noticed how long it has been since there was an american born MVP? And Luka is on deck
"Jonas Brothers" Valanciunas lolol. Also epic production value on these vids!
Man quit the meat ride. Know how you want to use the finance degree and why. If you are not into financial securities in any role man figure it out quick. My finance degree brought me nothing. I work entering invoices and data entry as a staff accountant. The title cool ig but I work with people who did not go to college or do not have a finance or business degree. Personally students who want to go for a finance degree should seriously talk to others outside of finance. You can learn finance outside of finance. Sorry if I sound negative but there is a disservice about business degree as a whole. I feel like finance has a flashy stigma and boy I got caught up looking at that and not looking at cons. Good interview tho.
The Tank race for Wemby 😂
This is why i hate this type of video.. It all depends from where you take the data, how much of it.... For example, if you mind watching this portion of the video.."Jordan vs Lebron - The Best GOAT Comparison" at 26:59 i'd appreciate XD. For 94 shots as sample size with ai don't know how much time for the win or whatever, Lebron has 20% convertion rate, he says..XD. As fans, some take this video, some look at that video.. What's the truth...nobody knows.XD
Maybe there is something coded in our DNA to root for the underdog. I can imagine early human hunters to appear quite physically outmatched when hunting big game
Not sure why I found this channel so late. Great audio, presentation and delivery.
I really do appreciate the quality of this video but the two best clutch players of All-Time had already retired by 1996.
The problem is the same as every other problem this country has... it's called 'Attitude'... combine this with 'Selfishness' and add a dash of virtue signaling...
I would live for basketball to actually be global. Idk how the other leagues work but if they do have an open market like world football, then that’s the next generation of basketball. I don’t think the nba would be a part of it because of the way America sports are organized. No g league team can ever play in the nba etc but the rest of the world is learning and doing well.
Great video! Context, analysis, examples, details, etc.
2:15 Edwards is a superstar now actually :)
absolutely ace video bud
Great video.
Clutchiness is entirely a product of narrative. It's not a skill. I'm not using narrative as a pejorative. Who hit the deciding shot or made the important plays down the stretch should obviously be included in any attempt to tell the story of the game. It's when people try to attribute variances created by sample sizes to moral superiority/inferiority that I find infuriating. Fortunately, regression to the mean and new variances caused by new small samples usually expose such bad fakes to ridicule. Unfortunately, this tends to create new narratives about certain players having/lacking the intestinal fortitude to overcome adversity. Nobody ever generated more of this psychobabble than Kobe Bryant, although Jordan might have been in contention if his Bulls teams had struggled more.
Clicked on this video and the first ad I got was about Playoff Mode...
This channel is like watching Community where a likeable Jeff Winger is leading an Understanding Basketball 201 study group. Some of the commenters seem to be taking away a racialized and decidedly wrong conclusion but that's coming from the commenters and our white supremacist culture, not the videos themselves.
Great content, subscribed. Looking forward to what's next. Cheers
